British Society for Middle Eastern Studies fundraiser for Gaza universities

Since October 2023, Gaza’s higher education sector has endured unprecedented devastation as a result of Israeli bombardment. Every university in Gaza has been damaged or destroyed, and over 100 professors and thousands of students have been killed, with many more displaced and suffering under Israel’s daily bombardments. Those who survive are striving to continue their studies despite limited access to facilities, resources, and opportunities.

University staff are also in dire need of support, with many left without salaries or livelihoods. Yet, against these odds, Gaza’s universities have resumed teaching through online programs, demonstrating extraordinary resilience and commitment to their mission.

How the BRISMES fund is helping

The BRISMES Fund for Higher Education in Gaza is raising funds for ISNAD, a scholarship programme run by Taawon, a Palestinian-led non-profit organisation based in Geneva. Donations received will help:

  • Provide scholarships for students in Gaza, allowing them to continue their education despite immense barriers;
  • Support university staff by helping institutions in Gaza pay salaries and sustain operations.

Why your support matters

By contributing to this initiative, you are directly supporting students, academics, and other university staff in Gaza, enabling them to continue their work and studies despite overwhelming adversity.

How you can help

  • £422 covers a full semester’s tuition for a university student.
  • £845 covers a full academic year.

The goal is to raise £25,000 as soon as possible. So far, the fund has raised almost £15,000. Every contribution—no matter the size—makes a transformative difference. Donate now.

If you are unable to donate, you can still help by sharing this fundraiser with your colleagues and networks.
