Call for participants: DSA Professional Development workshops for racially minoritised early career researchers

The DSA’s vision is for development studies to be a vibrant, diverse discipline offering critical thinking from a wide range of views. As part of this vision, we have undertaken a series of work to arrive at a fuller understanding of equality, inclusion and diversity within UK development studies. Find out more about this work.

We have secured partial funding from the Academy of Social Sciences Equality Diversity, and Inclusion grants scheme for a three-part programme to address the retention and progression of academics of colour and we are now seeking applications to attend a three-part in-person workshop series shaped by participant needs, covering topics such as career development, leadership, funding success, and building research networks.

Workshop highlights:

  • Interactive in-person sessions
  • Locations: London, Bath/Bristol, and Birmingham (TBC)
  • Dates: May, July, and September 2025
  • Format: Expert panels, practical exercises, and networking opportunities
  • Travel bursaries available for eligible participants

Who can apply?

Applications are open to Early Career Researchers (ECRs) with a PhD in development studies, including those based in departments such as geography, education, business, anthropology, sociology, political science, or public policy. ECRs at various stages of their academic careers, including final-year PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and those on fixed-term contracts or hourly paid positions, can apply.
