DSA2019: Opening up Development
The Open University, Milton Keynes, 19-21 June
All wishing to attend the conference must register online and in advance. This does not necessitate paying at that time; registrations are manually checked and an invoice emailed to delegates including payment instructions. Once you've received the invoice, please pay it within 30 days.
The registration fee includes access to all sessions, entrance to the drinks reception on Wednesday evening, the printed conference programme, three lunches (Wed, Thurs & Fri), and tea/coffee in the specified breaks. The conference social event will take place on Thursday 20th June - tickets for this are sold separately with registration (see below). The cost of the social event is subsidised to have a more inclusive and democratic format for this food and entertainment event as opposed to an exclusive, high-price conference dinner.
In order to reduce our plastic and waste footprint from such events, NomadIT and the Open University have organised the catering for this conference to be as free from single-use plastic as possible. Tea breaks will be served with crockery and not disposable cups and plates. Water will not be provided in small single-use bottles - these will not be available on site. Instead, we ask all delegates to bring with them a water bottle or re-usable cup/mug and there will be large water dispensers that delegates can fill their water bottles or cups from, free of charge. So please do not forget to pack this item! Lunch will be served in Vegware boxes, which are composted on site at the OU. We appreciate your understanding in trying to address such an important issue and being responsible for our own consumption and waste and in turn your flexibility in the slightly different way the daytime catering will be served.
The conference fees are:
DSA members or NGO workers*: £180
Concessions (student/retirees/no income): £140
Concession members of DSA (student/retirees/no income): £110
Day registrations: £50-110 depending on category (you can only take a day registration for a single day; to attend more than a day, you must take full conference registration).
*NGO workers can select the DSA member option price for either whole conference or day rate attendance in the online registration form.
The social event on the Thursday evening will be a ticketed event this year costing just £10 - make sure to select a social event ticket in the registration form, if you wish to attend. There will be world food stalls offering a variety of cuisine to delegates and live music entertainment from a local band. Your ticket can be exchanged at any one of the food stalls. Each stall will provide a combination (generally a main food portion and a soft drink) for each person. Alcohol can be purchased for cash at the bar nearby. We hope the weather will be fair and delegates can enjoy the live entertainment on the main lawn of the campus.
Please note that while joining DSA is not compulsory we strongly encourage you to do so, and support the community! Indeed the non-member rate is priced to encourage membership. Signing up for membership and paying the membership fee is a separate process from registering for the conference and paying the registration fee. Membership for students is only £10. For further information about DSA membership and to join up, please visit the DSA membership page.
Unfortunately, we do not have any University accommodation for delegates, as the Open University does not have a large local student population.
We have provided a list of accommodation options for delegates, which can be found here. Please proceed to book your own accommodation. Obviously, one can also search AirBnb, Booking.com and other such accommodation sites for other options in Milton Keynes.
There will be transport (minibuses) to ferry delegates between Milton Keynes town and the OU campus on all days during the conference. There will be back to back journeys at peak times (so that the wait at the train station should be no more than 15 minutes) and less frequent journeys off-peak. Unfortunately the minibuses are not suitable for those requiring disabled access. We can help organise travel requirements for anyone with special access needs.
If the minibuses are not convenient, then taxis are available that cost around £8 per journey between OU and the centre of Milton Keynes.
Any queries, please email conference(at)devstud.org.uk.
