Call for panels
The call for panels is now CLOSED. The Scientific committee have reviewed all proposals and all panel convenors have been notified of their decisions.
DSA2020 invited proposals for panels and workshops that engage critically with the theme of New Leadership for Global Challenges. We continued to encourage different types of sessions at this year’s conference. These might include debate, roundtable, ‘speed-dating’ and other non-conventional formats. A key aim is for all panels to attempt to combine academic and practitioners work within most panels. There will be the following different kinds of panels at the conference:
Paper panels: these panels will involve one or more sessions that are based around 3-4 papers, perhaps with a discussant. To promote the highest levels of intellectual exchange, we are looking for convenors who can commit to liaising closely with paper-givers in advance of the conference, with a view to securing high-quality papers. This may involve the submission of papers in advance, perhaps incentivised by a post-conference publication plan by panel convenors.
Roundtable panels: these panels can adopt various formats to achieve the purpose of fostering a high-quality exchange of ideas around the theme.
Experimental approaches to panels: these might fall outside regular academic paper panels or roundtables. Some possible formats or ideas might be debates, speed-dating, workshops, laboratories etc. It may be possible to go beyond the 90 minute session format if required. The format should be described within the long panel abstract.
DSA2020 will also feature a number of sessions to support postgraduate and early career researchers, including on ‘getting published’ and the use of social media to enhance your research profile.
Decisions over the proposals have been made by the conference convenors and have been communicated to all proposing convenors. The call for papers opens on 29th November.
While DSA encouraged convenors (those proposing/organising a panel) to address the issues outlined in the theme, this was not a prerequisite for panel acceptance. In particular DSA welcomed panel proposals from its study groups, and encouraged them to pursue the critical issues in their area, even if these are not strongly aligned to the conference theme.
Panel convenors may be graduate students. Convenors may also present a paper during the conference, either in their own panel or another. Due to the 'competition for time' within such a conference, colleagues are allowed to convene no more than one panel and present only one paper during the conference. This does not prevent you from making multiple proposals, but in the case of multiple acceptances we will ask you to make a choice.
The DSA requires all accepted panels to be open to paper proposals through the website; you may of course propose a panel with specific contributors in mind, but when the call for papers opens, you should be open to the possibility of other contributions arriving via the open call.
Panels convenors and paper presenters need not be members of the association. However, the DSA welcomes new members. Members of the association can register for the conference at a discounted fee.
All convenors, authors, chairs and discussants will be expected to register online in advance of the event and pay a registration fee to attend.
The DSA expects convenors of accepted panels to commit to the panel and conference: convenors will need to observe deadlines for action requested by the conference organisers, communicate with all those proposing papers to their panels to inform them of their decisions, and continue to communicate with the accepted presenters as the panel prepares for the event.
Panel convenors will need to select which papers they wish to accept to their panel during the period 22 January - 1 February 2020. So it is important you are able to do this during that time period.

Controlling/editing your panel
Panel convenors can login here. Later, when panels have been accepted/rejected, convenors are requested to administer their panels via this login environment. Convenors should log in to state any specific timing requests for their panel (when directed to so by the conference administrator), to add the names of chairs/discussants, and to manage the paper proposals. Co-convenors cannot be added/removed nor can panels be withdrawn through this environment - please email us to do this (address in footer).
When papers are proposed via the website, they will be proposed to specific panels. Convenors will receive a summary email of the proposal. Convenors are welcome to acknowledge proposals by email, and even to ask contributors to edit their abstracts by logging in themselves. When the call for papers is over, convenors must indicate their decisions about whether to accept/reject/transfer proposals through the login environment. If an author later emails to withdraw their paper, the convenors should mark the paper as 'Withdrawn' in the login environment, otherwise the conference administrator may not know of the withdrawal. The papers can be placed in order via the login environment, and this should be done once decisions about all papers have been made.
Length of panels
Panels may not last for more than a single day. Each day will have a maximum of three 90-minute panel sessions, each of which may hold up to four papers. So convenors should accept no more than twelve papers. That said, in 2019 due to some panels attracting a large number of paper proposals, we did allow these panels to have more than 3 sessions but this is rare. Generally, panels are limited to two sessions (i.e a max of 8 papers) and delegates appear to enjoy this approach.
The conference convenors will work on rehousing the paper proposals marked 'transfer', and we will get in touch if this affects your panel, before registration opens.
Pre-circulation of papers
The DSA has no rule about this but many convenors are keen to pre-circulate completed papers. To facilitate this and save on loads of email traffic, authors can upload a PDF of their paper within Cocoa, and it will then show as a downloadable file beneath their abstract on the public panel page on this site. It is your choice whether you instruct your presenters to make use of this.
Timing of presentations
How you allocate the time in your sessions is largely your decision and will depend on the session format. In a paper panel, the DSA norm is to allot each presenter a maximum of 20 minutes (for presentation and questions/discussion). The key is to respect the fact that many presenters have travelled a long way in order to be able to contribute and clearly need time to set out their argument.
While the online panel pages do not indicate the session breaks, we will indicate these in the printed programme. Convenors will be asked for paper distribution per session ahead of the print deadline, and are thereafter asked, where possible, to stick to this distribution.
Communication between authors/convenors
Convenor/author email addresses are not shown on the panel pages for anti-spam and privacy reasons. However, there is an in-built secure email messaging system. If you cannot work that, please email us to obtain the relevant email addresses.
